WHY SPAIN? Well, the chance to fly the Spanish Air Force's Multirole F-18 was an attraction, plus the exchange offered a whole new perspective to the role. I was the only German in my wing, so I was talking Spanish from the first day. I was quite young when I went to Spain — I was still a first lieutenant. SPANISH LESSONS? The basic stuff in Spain was the same, the flying procedures, but like every country, they sometimes had a different approach to finding a solution. That may be different than it would be in Germany or the UK, but this was one of the things which made the whole experience interesting and it was really no problem to adapt to it. The impressive thing was the bond between the pilots because they were a strong band of brothers.
